Aid to Russia Week

WELSHMEN LEAD THE WAY

Almost half Worthing’s total effort for Russia last week was raised by a party of Welshmen from Swansea whose singing at the Assembly Hall brought in over £400.

The Week raised between £800 and £1000. The Welsh Choir’s contribution was £413-3-0d.

Worthing’s Welsh Police Superintendent Lewis handed the Mayor a cheque for this amount yesterday.

Mr Lewis and Special-constable D F Jones, another Welshman, were responsible for the presence of the Choir.

At first it seemed that travelling expenses and difficulties would prevent their coming. When the Welshmen heard of this they offered to pay £25 out of their Choir funds in order that they could sing in Worthing.

The Welshmen were told to come and at Worthing special appeals were sent out to cover their travelling expenses. The appeals more than met these expenses.

So it was the Choir, the Morriston Orpheus Male Choir, Eisteddfod winners on many occasions, came to Worthing.

Worthing policemen sold 500 5s* tickets and 1,300 2s-6d+ tickets, and the Assembly Hall was packed to hear the Welshmen. Collections and the sale of programmes brought in another £65.
