Orpheus goes 'virtual'

With the Corona Virus pandemic bringing a temporary end to the Choir's twice weekly rehearsals at Swansea University it did not take long for the idea of virtual rehearsal sessions to emerge. Aaron Brown a member of the Choir's bass section and one of the Choir's youngest members, suggested the idea to the Choir's management committee and within a matter of days an initial session was set up with MD Joy Amman Davies leading a group from her Cardiff home.

The Choir has build on that initial success and now over 40 members of the Choir are taking part in the sessions with more coming on board on a regular basis.

It's a little different from the normal rehearsal sessions however with the constraints of the technolgy preventing choristers hearing a uniform sound from all participants. Only the MD's mic is live during the singing sections of the rehearsal but her piano playing and direction is seen and heard by all choristers who are able to sing along at home.

It's not just the music that's important during the sessions however and there are also opportunities for all choristers to chat and share updates etc with each other.

The sessions have caught the attention of the media and you can see an item from the BBC TV's Wales Today news programme below. Also click here for the coverage on BBC Wales News Online

It wasn't just from within Wales that interest emerged however with BBC Radion 5 Live dropping in on one of the early sessions to record a piece to broadcast on its Breakfast Show.
